Govt schools in Bengaluru cry for attention

Bengaluru: The Government Schools of the state have earned appreciation for achieving a good pass percentage in the SSLC examination, the results of which were announced on Thursday. However, many schools in the city are still lagging behind and need the immediate attention of the authorities. Several schools run by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) are in a poor condition, both in terms of infrastructure and performance.
In Sunkenahalli Ward (No. 142), the Boys’ High School run by BBMP was closed over six years ago. The school was reportedly shut down due to the dwindling student strength.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that the MLA of the Chickpet Assembly Constituency Uday Garudachar had been negligent about the government schools in the area. It said only one out of the four government schools in Sunkenahalli ward is functioning now. However, the Principal of Sunkenahalli Government High School said it was the only government school in the ward, while the other two were run by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
The Chamarajpet Corporation Girls’ High School was converted into a co-education school and boys from the closed High School were accommodated here. This school, which is located near Kempambudhi Lake, also needs structural repair. Chamarajpet Corporation High School wore a deserted look on Friday even after reopening, with a handful of teachers and students present in the school.
An official from the BBMP’s Education Department said that the Corporation has planned a total revamp for many of its schools. “We understand the situation and intend to make several changes. We need to get the buildings repaired and also recruit many teachers. The process is underway,” he said.
