The Bangalore University Postgraduate Students and Research Scholars’ Association has called for a bandh on Monday; demanding the withdrawal of complaints lodged against two research scholars.
The police complaint was filed by the in-charge finance officer following a protest on May 27 where the students had reportedly barged into her chamber.
The students were protesting the vice-chancellor’s move to get funds released to the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in a hurried manner.
It was alleged that the funds were being sourced from several bank accounts without the approval of the syndicate.
Naveen, a research scholar, said that there was no precedent of a university official lodging a complaint against a student with the police in the history of Bangalore University.
He questioned the need for the officials to plan the release of the fund at night.
“About 3,000 students from across departments participated in the demonstration. Several teachers and non-teaching staff have also extended their support,” said Naveen.
The association has decided to continue the bandh till the complaint is withdrawn.
Meanwhile, some students attended classes which saw poor attendance. “We did conduct classes which were attended by a few students,” a professor at BU told News Trail.
“We tried to conduct classes, but the strength was very poor. After the first hour, all the students joined the protest,” another professor said.
