Bengaluru:

The city police officers attached to the Cyber Economics and Narcotics (CEN) department arrested a person who had allegedly cheated a government official and stole his debit card under the pretext of helping him generate a new ATM PIN.

The accused was identified by the police as Mallinath Angadi, 32, (in pic) a resident of Attur Layout in Yelahanka. The police also recovered four gold chains weighing 75 grams and three gold rings, which the accused had allegedly bought with the money withdrawn from the stolen debit card.

The debit card was stolen on June 13 when the complainant visited the Canara Bank ATM near Yelahanka New Town area. As the complainant had recently opened an account and obtained a new card, he did not know how to generate a PIN.

"The accused helped him generate a PIN and withdraw Rs 40,000 from his account before allegedly changing his debit card with a dummy card he had," police said.

The truth dawned on the complainant only when he wanted to withdraw more cash during the next week, police added. After failing to withdraw cash, the government official checked with his bank and found that the card had been changed and that Rs 8,51,534 had been missing from his account. Thereafter, a complaint was filed with the CEN police in Yelahanka regarding the incident
