Elephant dies of stomach ailment, oral ulcer at Bannerghatta park

 Close on the heels of the tiger Kiran dying of a blood infection, an elephant Sunder died at Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) on Friday night.

An official statement by BBP said the tusker had been suffering from chronic stomach pain and oral ulcer since Tuesday.

“Bannerghatta Biological Park regrets to inform the sad demise of Elephant ‘Sunder’ on August 26, late night. Sunder was rescued from Kollapura temple, Maharashtra by PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) and brought to Bannerghatta Biological Park in 2014.

 “The giant was first ill on August 23 and the veterinary team examined the same and found that he was suffering from acute colic pain and was treated accordingly.

 On August 25, severe oral ulceration was observed. Animal showed slight signs of improvement and treatment was continued.

However, Sunder stopped responding to the treatment eventually and passed away on August 26 at 9.30pm,” a BBP statement said.

 “A post-mortem will be conducted in the presence of PETA representatives and samples will be collected and sent to IAH&VB (Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals) Lab for further examination,” it added.
