Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, performed a robot-assisted kidney transplant on Dr Benson, a 61-year-old African doctor battling End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). The surgery, led by a multidisciplinary team of experts, marked a significant milestone in overcoming medical complexities associated with morbid obesity and hypertension. Dr Benson had been managing ESRD for over six months. Despite seeking treatment across several countries, his co-morbidities led to repeated rejections. Desperate for a solution, he approached Fortis Hospital, where a comprehensive evaluation recommended a robot-assisted transplant as the best option. His 23-year-old son, a perfect donor match, facilitated the surgery.
The procedure, lasting approximately two and a half hours, was led by Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Senior Director of Renal Sciences, with support from Dr Shakir Tabrez and Dr. Renuka Prasad.
Using cutting-edge robotic technology, the team ensured precision, minimal scarring, and faster recovery. Remarkably, Dr Benson's kidney function normalised within 72 hours, and he was discharged just six days later.
“Robotic surgery offers unparalleled precision, smaller incisions, and reduced recovery time,” said Dr. Keshavamurthy. “This case underscores our expertise in handling complex procedures with advanced technology, giving international patients a second chance at life.”
