Ninety-seven lawyers have submitted applications for the designation of Senior Advocate at the Karnataka High Court. This initiative follows a notice from the High Court's registry on April 4, 2024, inviting applications for the prestigious title. Each application includes written endorsements from two Senior Advocates, as mandated by the Karnataka High Court (Designation of Senior Advocates) Rules, 2018. In response to these applications, the registry is currently seeking feedback from stakeholders to aid in the evaluation process.
Suggestions must be submitted by November 28, 2024. Under the 2018 Rules, applicants are evaluated based on several criteria. They can earn between 10 and 20 points for their years of legal practice, while up to 40 points are awarded for their contributions to legal formulations in both reported and unreported judgments. Additionally, applicants may receive a maximum of 15 points for any published works and up to 25 points for their "personality and suitability," which is assessed through an interview. In December 2021, 51 lawyers from the Karnataka High Court were granted the Senior Advocate designation, highlighting the significance and competitive nature of this accolade.
